A Brief History of the 2A-Style Optical Compressor

First introduced in the 1960s, the 2A-style optical compressor quickly became a studio standard due to its smooth, natural compression and tube-driven warmth. Unlike FET or VCA compressors, the optical design uses a light-dependent resistor (LDR) to control gain reduction, creating an organic, program-dependent attack and release that responds musically to the input signal.

Celebrated for its effortless vocal compression, the 2A also excels on bass, guitars, and even mix buses, providing transparent leveling with just two simple controls—Gain and Peak Reduction.
