Originally conceived by Universal Audio founder Bill Putnam in the early 1960s, the UA 176 was the precursor to the iconic 1176. It used a tube-based variable-mu design, offering ultra-smooth gain reduction with tube-driven warmth and a powerful midrange presence.

Decades later, Retro Instruments brought the 176 back — hand-wired and updated for the modern studio, with added flexibility and an all-analog signal path. It's now a secret weapon for engineers like CLA, who have publicly praised it as their preferred vocal compressor over even the beloved Blue Stripe 1176.
